Socialists believe that economic resources should be shared equally by everyone. No one should have more stuff than anyone else. Everyone should have an equal share and the purpose of government is make sure everyone shares equally.
In a Capitalist society the economic resources are owned by individuals. People can own as much as they want to own and government has no roll to play in the economy. The individual is more important than  society.
